Autonomy – defined as “the feeling that your life – its activities and habits — are self-chosen and self-endorsed.”

It turns out that if we feel we have autonomy (control) in our lives we are likely to be the most happy.
A University of Michigan nationwide survey also sings the praises of autonomy – reporting how the 15% of Americans who claimed they felt “in control of their lives” also raved about having “extraordinarily positive feelings of happiness.”
The feeling of control, which can come from a million and one small choices and preferences, not just the larger things in life, is the real “secret” to happiness.
