The law of Jante

The idea that there is a pattern of group behaviour towards individuals within Scandinavian communities that negatively portrays and criticises individual success and achievement as unworthy and inappropriate

You might not be Scandinavian, but you may have fallen victim to the law of Jante- its a way of repressing others in a group so as not to expose those who lack the same levels of talent or skill.

Its how he underachievers try to keep the overachievers in check.

Basically its tall poppy syndrome– and it serves no purpose other than to hold people back and stunt progress.

There are 10 rules of Jante, know as the “Jante’s Shield” as following this behaviour protects you from standing out.

  1. You’re not to think you are anything special.
  2. You’re not to think you are as good as we are.
  3. You’re not to think you are smarter than we are.
  4. You’re not to convince yourself that you are better than we are.
  5. You’re not to think you know more than we do.
  6. You’re not to think you are more important than we are.
  7. You’re not to think you are good at anything.
  8. You’re not to laugh at us.
  9. You’re not to think anyone cares about you.
  10. You’re not to think you can teach us anything.

Taking the emphasis from individual achievement and downplaying it is not only counter productive, it’s damaging to future success and progress.

You are special, you are unique and you are cared for.
