A simple distinction

People don’t want to be millionaires – they want to experience what they believe only millions can buy

This powerful and insightful quotation can be found in The 4-Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss.

Most people – myself included approach life with the “more is better” mindset and this is never truer than with money.

Ask someone how much money they require for their dream lifestyle and they will give you an arbitrary figure and it will almost always be a severe multiple of the true amount required to live the life they seek.

The issue which Tim so clearly points out is that no-one understands that you can probably achieve the lifestyle you desire if you sat down, budgeted for what you wanted and then set out to make the money to make it happen.

By putting things off until you have XX millions in your bank account – which sadly for most people may never happen – you are abdicating responsibility for your happiness and guaranteeing you won’t reach it.

By sitting down and deciding you want to clear your debts, travel to Thailand and climb a mountain – or whatever it is you truly want from life – and then costing out each step you will be surprised by how more achievable these goals are – and none of them require millionaire status.
